Diabetes, either type one or type two, can carry with it possible complications that you need to aware of and stay on top of. This included your eyes and our Spring Valley optometrist, Dr. Romy Park, will do a diabetic eye exam to determine if you have any signs of diabetic retinopathy. Early detection greatly increases the chances of successful treatment.
Diabetic retinopathy causes damage to your blood vessels. As is the case with many eye diseases, diabetic retinopathy may show no obvious symptoms even as it begins to advance. So if you are diabetic, it is highly recommended that you come in yearly to see our Spring Valley optometrist and be checked thoroughly. Everyone should have a yearly eye exam, but the need is more obvious for diabetics because of the susceptibility to retinopathy and the damage it can cause if it is not addressed. It can lead to glaucoma and in severe cases can even cause death. There is no reason to be frightened or anxious, though. Because with your yearly diabetic eye exam, you can feel confident of staying ahead of any major problems.
Although symptoms are not always present, there are definitely signs that could indicate the presence of retinopathy. These signs include floaters, which are spots seen in front of your eyes. Others are blurry vision, difficulty perceiving colors, and vision loss. If you do experience any of those symptoms, do not worry. None of them assure that you are dealing with diabetic retinopathy. However, you should promptly call us to make an appointment with our Spring Valley optometrist. Possible retinopathy needs to be addressed. If a positive diagnosis is made, you may be referred to a specialist for additional follow up.
The best way to maintain the best level of health possible when you have diabetes is to maintain regular checkups and follow your doctor’s advice on diet, lifestyle, and medication. When it comes to your eyes, diabetes can affect them but our Spring Valley optometrist is here to help make sure that does not happen. With a diabetic eye exam every year, you can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are doing right by your health and by your eye in particular.
